Vision

The Retreat Church is a place where we connect and grow, so that we can give hope & life.
HISTORY & COMMUNITY
The Retreat Church is a local part of a worldwide Christian movement called The Church of the Nazarene.
In the early 20th century, the founders of The Church of the Nazarene desired to meet the needs of the rejected and marginalized in Los Angeles. Because of this desire, they chose a name that would correspond with the brokenness of Jesus’ hometown of Nazareth. Though He was raised in brokenness, He gave hope and life by giving Himself.
It is into this brokenness The Church of the Nazarene continues to give the hope and life of Jesus. You can discover more on our theology and doctrines at nazarene.org.
STATEMENT OF FAITH
We believe in one God—the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
We believe that the Old and New Testament Scriptures, given by plenary inspiration, contain all truth necessary to faith and Christian living.
We believe that man is born with a fallen nature, and is, therefore, inclined to evil, and that continually.
We believe that the finally impenitent are hopelessly and eternally lost.
We believe that the atonement through Jesus Christ is for the whole human race; and that whosoever repents and believes on the Lord Jesus Christ is justified and regenerated and saved from the dominion of sin.
We believe that believers are to be sanctified wholly, subsequent to regeneration, through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
We believe that the Holy Spirit bears witness to the new birth, and also to the entire sanctification of believers.
We believe that our Lord will return, the dead will be raised, and the final judgment will take place.
LIVING STRATEGY
OIKOS - At The Retreat Church, we reach out to our relational world through the Oikos principle (8-15 Your World is Smaller than you Think, by Tom Mercer). Each member of The Retreat Church is called to pray daily for those in their lives that do not yet have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. This daily prayer is coupled with acts of service and invitations to church activities.
EQUIP - We operate according to the model as described in Ephesians 4:11-16. In this passage, the Apostle Paul writes,
“And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.”
Based upon this passage of Scripture, the pastor’s role is to equip the membership of the church to minister to each other and their relational worlds. Members are to discover and use their gifts and abilities for the sake of each other’s growth. We do not seek to build a crowd of people participating in a worship service; we seek to build teams of active workers who connect, grow and give.
LEAD - We lead from a transformational leadership perspective. Every leader at The Retreat Church is to build teams and release them to use their gifts for the benefit of the whole community. Transformational leaders are humble and submissive servants while working as visionaries and strategic thinkers who build teams. They are compassionately assertive communicators that empower the next generation to continuing building the church.
